I am intensely proud of this recording, and not just because Bass Player Magazine embarrassed me by picking it as their Feature Review back in March of 1997.

The first disc is a wild, scattershot collection of live-to-tape tunes and outtakes from Mike, Toss and I in a studio at Musician's Institute in Hollywood. See Bryan play, see Bryan fuck up, see Mike stop the band and start over more than once. Certain technical limitations of the recordings forced us to go with semi-rough mixes for the release, and because I kept turning up during the tracking, the bass is insanely loud by the end of the first disc.

But the real magic is Disc Two. Recorded on 2/22/96 at the performance venue of the same Musician's Institute, the show was, dare I say, perfect. The front-of-house engineer ran a mono (??) mix straight to tape, and for once, the board mix was just about perfect for recording as well. Shortly before the show, Toss informed Mike and I that he was withdrawing from full-time membership in Beer For Dolphins, which gave the show an edge unlike most others.

I realize that comparing the trio '96 BFD to current lineups is 100% apples and oranges, but I'll say it anyway: aside from an undocumented show in Houston in late 1996, I still believe that this is the best show ever played under the name Mike Keneally and Beer For Dolphins. I can't recommend this hard-to-find double-live CD highly enough.
