I've never been a big Genesis freak, so I hadn't
even heard this song before the power trio of Keneally, myself and
Toss Panos were commissioned to cover it for a Genesis tribute album
sometime in what I think was 1997. Turns out the track never made
the final sequence, but I managed to get a cassette copy of the
final mix, and it grew on me over time. I also had some sentimental
attachment to it because it was the last work Keneally and I ever
did with Toss as the original Mike Keneally trio (before we reunited
for the track "See You Next Tuesday" on my solo album View.
The engineer, Dino Maddalone III, was really into the "big" rock
sound, so both Keneally and I used tones we probably wouldn't have
had they not been requested.
The track laid dormant for years, until the kind
folks who help organize the progressive rock festival NEARfest decided
to put together a double-CD compilation to benefit the victims of
Hurricane Katrina. They asked around for unreleased tracks or other
desirable audio nuggets for the release, and Keneally and I remembered
that this track was still floating around. I've always thought it
was really cool myself - cool enough that I had it posted it at
the "rarities" section of my site for years. It's not a rarity anymore,
thought, and I encourage you to check it out and donate to a worthy
cause at the same time.
